La Femme, No Homme? is the result of Half a Cow Records deciding that it didn't have enough female artists on its roster. The bands that are represented on the CD are mainly female and mainly Australian, with a couple of East Coast US bands thrown into the mix.

Quite a few of the bands have boy drummers, but a refreshingly large percentage of drummers on La Femme, No Homme? are female, including Nitocris drummer Andi, SPDFGH's Melanie Thurgar and Skulker's Angela Blackshaw. In addition to information about all of the bands, the 32-page booklet that accompanies the CD has an interview with drummer Moe Tucker, an article by Mel Lake, Co-Owner and Manager of Quietly Suburban Recordings and Label Co-ordinator of Modular Recordings and an article by bass guitarist Kerrie Hickin.

While some of the bands are signed to labels and the the songs that appear on this CD have either been previously released or earmarked for future release, there are some newer groups whose music is being presented by a label for the first time. The 18 tracks were written and recorded from as early as the mid-eighties through to 2000, so the sound varies between songs, although most fit into the pop/rock genre.

If you like tunes with heavy bass and smooth harmonies, you'll enjoy Robyn St Clare's Slow Slide Down while fans of faster paced girly rock with heavy guitars will appreciate O.B.I.D. by Nitocris and Skulker's Hej. Stella One Eleven's Go Slow Girl has a synthesised studio sound reminiscent of Natalie Imbruglia's earlier music, while Junior by Biston Moss is poppy with a folk feel.

The diverse styles of music represented on La Femme, No Homme? mean that there is something on there to suit everyone's taste - and the rest will grow on you after a few listens anyway! If you want an idea of what the female musicans in Australia are producing, listening to this CD will give you a good start.

Look out for Volume 2 of La Femme, No Homme?, which will be released by Half a Cow Records in the near future.
